KUNM Radio Development Director University of New Mexico

KUNM’s Manager of Marketing & Development, internally titled “Development Director,” needs to be both entrepreneurial and able to work within the parameters of an institutional setting. Some public stations licensed to a state or private University are given some level of institutional funding. This is not the case at KUNM. 

The University provides KUNM’s facility and umbrella services such as human resources (benefit plans, retirement plan, etc.), business services, and facilities support. However, the entirety of non-grant-funded staff costs, as well as equipment, some program acquisition costs and other operational costs, need to be raised: roughly $1.54 million in FY19. This is the primary responsibility of the Development Director.

KUNM is a unique station in the world of public radio. It is a public/community hybrid station, started in 1966 by students and licensed to the Regents of the University of New Mexico. However, it has a long history of community volunteers providing a lion’s share of our diverse local program schedule. 

KUNM is unique also in its national programming mix, being one of the few stations in a comparable market size to carry both NPR news magazines and Pacifica’s Democracy Now.  The station has a long and historic commitment to local news and public affairs.  The five full-time professionals, two half-time news magazine anchors and paid student interns make up the largest radio newsroom in the state.

The Development Director needs to work comfortably within this mix of volunteers and professional staff, managing the efforts of four full-time employees (half in underwriting and half in membership), and up to four UNM student employees during the Spring and Fall semesters. Also, the Development Director needs to produce training materials and methodologies, actually coordinating training for the staff and volunteer corps (including 240 phone room volunteers) ahead of each semi-annual on-air fundraiser. 

Since KUNM operates with a majority of donated funds from the community (either individual donors, or businesses and non-profits), the Development Director needs to be very mindful of expenditures, working with the General Manager to craft annual budgets, then hit revenue projections and live within the allocated expenses.

The Development Director is also responsible to ensure unwavering compliance with FCC regulations for public broadcasting. Consequences of violating those regulations can be catastrophic.

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Multi-year track record as a successful Development/Marketing professional, preferably as a lead Development professional in a public radio or other public broadcasting setting. However, leading successful fundraising at levels of at least $1 million per year in a non-profit setting could be considered.  
  • Successful digital fundraising strategy.  Knowledge of databases and software platforms to support digital fundraising.
  • Thorough knowledge of FCC regulations for public broadcasting announcements.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a diverse environment with a wide variety of constituents, from professional staff, students, and volunteers to major donors, those with complaints, vendors, and the general public.
  • Have developed training curriculum and support materials, print, video and/or digital.  Experience providing training to adults a plus.
  • Copy writing. Be able to produce and edit high quality concise radio scripts.  Able to write professional direct mail marketing materials and other member/donor correspondence.
  • Proven on-air fundraiser a plus.
  • Experience working with graphic artists to produce marketing materials, both print and digital.
  • Experience drafting and managing budgets.
  • Supervisory/managerial training and experience.
  • Completed a successful capital campaign.
