New Mexico Broadcasters Foundation

New Mexico broadcasters have been vital partners in their communities across the state. From the exciting play-by-play of the local high school football game, to helping first responders coordinate resources and communications in a crisis, New Mexico broadcasters dedicate time, money and energy to their communities.

Every year, radio and television stations across the state also provide millions of dollars in free airtime to promote local fundraisers, school activities, local charities and other events, and these events, in turn have have raised millions of dollars to support those communities.

The New Mexico Broadcasters Foundation continues in this tradition by giving tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to New Mexico students attending New Mexico colleges and universities.

Mission and Beliefs:

The NMBA Foundation provides annual scholarship to ensure that any in New Mexico student interested in the broadcast industry can succeed. We believe that:

  • public education excellence is vital for our democracy and should be attainable for all;
  • students should actively pursue their education;
  • New Mexico is a diverse population and our industry should accurately reflect that of our communities education and real-life experience should go hand in hand

Through the New Mexico Broadcasters Foundation fund raising efforts, the NMBF awards scholarship money to member stations who have participated and supported our PEP program throughout the year.

The stations’ eligibility is based on being a member of the NMBA, having made a financial contribution to the NMBF and airing 60% of the previous year’ s PEP campaigns. Qualifying stations are given the creative freedom of designing, advertising, selecting and awarding their own scholarships. Since the program’s inception in 2013, 78 students from the communities of Las Cruces, Farmington, Las Vegas, Carlsbad, Santa Rosa, Bloomfield, Gallup, Deming, Espanola, Hobbs, Santa Fe, Portales, Silver City and Alamogordo have received over $45,000 in scholarship money.

University Classes

Inside Radio and Television C&J 393 Section 05 is a mix of lecture, tours and on-site learning -- the class gives each student a chance to see the opportunities existing in the broadcast industry today.

Students have the opportunity to be on-air DJs, cover UNM and high school sporting events, learn about how each department within a television or radio station supports the overall goals.

The class is divided into sections – four lectures from those working in the field, four trips to local stations and eight weeks of hands-on learning at a specific broadcasting site.

NMBA participants: KRQE-TV, KOB-TV, Cumulus Media, iHeart Media and American General Media in Albuquerque.

It’s a great opportunity to meet broadcasters while learning about the industry. Many of the students who have signed up for this class have been offered permanent jobs at local radio and television stations. In addition, as a bonus, students who finish the entire class receive a stipend from the New Mexico Broadcasters Association.
